Biography

Kendrick Lamar Duckworth was born in Compton, California, on June 17, 1987. His parents had moved to Compton from Chicago to escape the city's gang culture. Lamar began writing rhymes as a teenager and released his first mixtape in 2003 under the name K.Dot. This release led to him signing with Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) in 2005. He was part of the hip hop supergroup Black Hippy alongside other TDE artists.

Career Breakthrough

Lamar's debut studio album, Section.80, was released in 2011 and garnered critical acclaim. It was a concept album that explored the lives of millennials and the impact of the 1980s crack epidemic. Following its success, he signed a joint deal with Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records. His major-label debut, good kid, m.A.A.d city (2012), was a massive commercial and critical success, earning him widespread recognition and multiple Grammy nominations. The album, which details his experiences growing up in Compton, is noted for its narrative structure and became the longest-charting hip-hop studio album on the Billboard 200.

Artistic Evolution and Acclaim

Lamar's next album, To Pimp a Butterfly (2015), incorporated elements of jazz, funk, and spoken word. It was a critical masterpiece, breaking streaming records on Spotify and earning him five Grammy Awards. The single "Alright" became an anthem for social justice movements. His 2017 album, DAMN., took a more direct and pop-leaning approach, featuring the hit single "Humble." The album was a commercial success and made history in 2018 when it became the first non-classical or jazz work to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. The Pulitzer board described the album as a "virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life."
