Biography

Carolina Giraldo Navarro, known professionally as Karol G, is a Colombian singer and songwriter born on February 14, 1991, in Medellín. She is considered one of the most influential artists in the reggaeton and urban pop genres. From a young age, her father, a musician, influenced her interest in music. After high school, she studied music at the University of Antioquia.

Early Career and Breakthrough

At the age of 14, Karol G appeared on the Colombian version of the reality show The X Factor. In the following years, she released several singles, including "En la Playa" (2007), "Por Ti" (2008), and "Dime Que Sí" (2009). For a time, she worked as a backup singer for other artists, including Reykon. A significant step in her early career was the 2013 single "Amor de Dos," featuring Nicky Jam, which increased her visibility. In 2016, she signed with Universal Music Latino.

Her major breakthrough came in 2017 with the release of "Ahora Me Llama" in collaboration with Bad Bunny. The song became a massive hit, reaching number 10 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart. This success was followed by her debut studio album, Unstoppable, which debuted at number two on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart. Thom Jurek of AllMusic called the album "the first solid entry by a woman in the Latin trap movement."

Karol G's success continued with a string of hit singles. In 2018, she released "Mi Cama," which became a commercial success, and "Culpables" with Anuel AA. In 2019, her collaboration with Nicki Minaj on the song "Tusa" became a global phenomenon, charting internationally and receiving a 28x Latin platinum certification from the RIAA. That same year, she released her second album, Ocean, which showcased a more relaxed sound. The collaborative track "China," featuring Anuel AA, Daddy Yankee, Ozuna, and J Balvin, became her first music video to surpass one billion views on YouTube.
