Biography
Joshua Christian Nanai (born November 5, 2002), known professionally as Jawsh 685, is a music producer from New Zealand. He was born in Auckland and is of Samoan and Cook Islander descent. The "685" in his name is a reference to the country calling code for Samoa.
Career Beginnings
Jawsh 685 started producing beats while attending Manurewa High School. His music is influenced by the "siren jam" trend in New Zealand, which involves creating mid-tempo, reggaeton-like beats to be played through siren speakers often attached to cars or bicycles. He began uploading his creations to YouTube in 2019.
Breakthrough with "Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)"
In 2019, he created an instrumental titled "Laxed (Siren Beat)". The track went viral on the social media platform TikTok in 2020, leading to a dance challenge known as the "Culture Dance". The song's popularity surged after American singer Jason Derulo created his own song, "Savage Love," sampling the beat without initial authorization. Following a resolution, the song was officially released as a collaboration between Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo in June 2020, titled "Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)".
The song achieved massive international success, reaching number one in over 15 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. A remix featuring South Korean boy band BTS was later released, which also topped the charts in several countries.
Subsequent Work
Following the success of "Savage Love," Jawsh 685 has collaborated with other artists. In 2020, he released the single "Sweet & Sour" featuring Lauv and Tyga. In 2024, he once again teamed up with Jason Derulo for the track "Make Me Happy".
