Biography

Foster the People is an American indie pop band that formed in Los Angeles, California, in 2009. The group was founded by multi-instrumentalist Mark Foster, who after years as a struggling musician and commercial jingle writer, formed the band with his friends, drummer Mark Pontius and bassist Cubbie Fink. Originally, the band was named "Foster & the People," but the name was often misheard as "Foster the People." The band eventually adopted the misheard name.

Breakthrough with "Torches"

In 2010, Foster the People posted the song "Pumped Up Kicks" online, where it quickly went viral and earned the band a record deal with Startime International. This sleeper hit became one of the most popular songs of 2011, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and receiving a Grammy Award nomination. Their debut studio album, "Torches," was released in May 2011. The album, which also featured singles like "Helena Beat" and "Houdini," peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album.

"Supermodel" and "Sacred Hearts Club"

The band's second album, "Supermodel," was released in March 2014, preceded by the lead single "Coming of Age." The album was a concept record that explored themes of consumerism and the negative side of popular culture. It reached number three on the Billboard 200. For their third album, "Sacred Hearts Club," released in July 2017, the band's lineup officially expanded to include touring members Isom Innis and Sean Cimino. This album saw the band experimenting with a mix of genres, including soul, dance, and electronic music. The single "Sit Next to Me" from this album became a significant hit, reaching number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Band Member Changes

Over the years, the band has seen several lineup changes. Bassist Cubbie Fink left the band in 2015. In 2021, drummer and founding member Mark Pontius also departed, leaving Mark Foster as the sole remaining original member. Sean Cimino left the band in 2024. The current official members are Mark Foster and Isom Innis.

Recent Years and "Paradise State of Mind"

Between 2018 and 2021, Foster the People released several singles and two EPs. After an unofficial hiatus, the band returned in May 2024 with the single "Lost in Space." Their fourth studio album, "Paradise State of Mind," was released on August 16, 2024. The album is noted for its influences from late 1970s disco, funk, and jazz.
