Biography

Fall Out Boy is an American rock band formed in Wilmette, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, in 2001. The band consists of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Patrick Stump, bassist Pete Wentz, lead guitarist Joe Trohman, and drummer Andy Hurley. The group emerged from Chicago's hardcore punk scene, with Wentz and Trohman initially forming the band as a pop-punk side project.

Early Years and Breakthrough

The band went through a succession of drummers before Andy Hurley joined. Their debut album, "Take This to Your Grave," was released in 2003 and became an underground success, helping them garner a dedicated fanbase. In 2005, Fall Out Boy released their major-label debut, "From Under the Cork Tree." The album was a commercial success, producing two hit singles, "Sugar, We're Goin Down" and "Dance, Dance," and achieving double-platinum status. This album transformed the group into superstars and earned them a Best New Artist nomination at the 2006 Grammy Awards.

Continued Success and Hiatus

Their third album, "Infinity on High" (2007), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and included the hit singles "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race" and "Thnks fr th Mmrs." Their 2008 album, "Folie à Deux," however, received a mixed response and was a commercial disappointment compared to its predecessors. Following the release of their greatest hits album, "Believers Never Die – Greatest Hits," in 2009, the band announced an indefinite hiatus. During the break, the members pursued various side projects.

Reunion and Subsequent Albums

In 2013, Fall Out Boy announced their return, releasing the album "Save Rock and Roll" which became their second number-one album. The lead single, "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)," was a top-20 hit. They followed this with the "PAX AM Days" EP later that year. Their sixth studio album, "American Beauty/American Psycho" (2015), also debuted at number one and featured the popular singles "Centuries" and "Uma Thurman." The band's seventh album, "Mania" (2018), also reached the top spot on the charts, making it their fourth number-one album. Their most recent studio album, "So Much (for) Stardust," was released in 2023.
