Biography
Claire Cottrill, known professionally as Clairo, was born on August 18, 1998, in Atlanta, Georgia, and grew up in Carlisle, Massachusetts. She began posting music to the internet at the age of 13, eventually creating a significant following on platforms like Bandcamp and SoundCloud.
Career Beginnings and "Pretty Girl"
Clairo's career gained significant momentum in 2017 when the music video for her lo-fi pop song "Pretty Girl" went viral on YouTube. The video's unpretentious, webcam-shot aesthetic resonated with a wide audience. The song's success led to her signing a record contract with Fader Label.
Diary 001 EP and Immunity
In 2018, she released her debut EP, "Diary 001". This project saw her collaborate with artists like Rejjie Snow and Danny L Harle, expanding on her bedroom pop sound. Her debut studio album, "Immunity," was released in 2019. Co-produced by Rostam Batmanglij (formerly of Vampire Weekend), the album received critical acclaim for its more polished production and introspective lyrics, featuring popular tracks like "Bags" and "Sofia."
Sling and Musical Evolution
Clairo's second studio album, "Sling," was released in 2021. Co-produced with Jack Antonoff, the album marked a significant sonic shift, moving towards a 1970s folk and soft-rock-inspired sound. The album explores themes of domesticity, adulthood, and personal growth and also received widespread critical acclaim. She has been nominated for several awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album for "Sling."
