Biography

Christopher Daniel Soriano Jr., professionally known as CJ, is an American rapper born on January 4, 1997, in Staten Island, New York. Of Puerto Rican descent, he began his journey into music at a young age, starting to rap at nine and uploading his songs to platforms like YouTube and SoundCloud by the age of 14.

Career Breakthrough

CJ rose to prominence in 2020 with his breakout single "Whoopty". The drill track, self-released in July 2020, quickly went viral and achieved massive commercial success. It peaked at number 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100, number 3 on the UK Singles Chart, and reached the top 10 of the Billboard Global 200. The song's success led to CJ signing a record deal with Warner Records and his uncle James Cruz's label, Cruz Control Entertainment.

"Whoopty" and Musical Style

"Whoopty" utilized a sample from the Indian song "Sanam Re" and was noted for its Brooklyn drill sound, drawing comparisons to the late rapper Pop Smoke. The track's energy and catchy nature were key to its popularity. Following its success, official remixes were released, including a "NYC" version with French Montana and Rowdy Rebel, and a "Latin Mix" with Anuel AA and Ozuna.

Subsequent Work

In February 2021, CJ released his debut EP titled "Loyalty Over Royalty," which was executive produced by French Montana. The EP included the single "Bop," his follow-up to "Whoopty," and "Lil Freak" featuring DreamDoll. Despite the success of his debut single, CJ has been described by some as a one-hit wonder. In 2022, he signed a new deal with AWAL Recordings and released the single "Dubai".

Influences

CJ has cited prominent New York rappers such as 50 Cent, Jay-Z, and the Wu-Tang Clan as his musical influences. He was also inspired by the drill scene and the late Pop Smoke.
