Bad Bunny
Biography
Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, known professionally as Bad Bunny, is a Puerto Rican rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor who is credited with helping Spanish-language music achieve mainstream global success. Born on March 10, 1994, in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, he was raised in a home where music was a constant presence, with his mother often playing salsa, merengue, and ballads. He began singing in a church choir at a young age and started writing his own songs inspired by artists like Daddy Yankee around the age of 13.
Early Career and Breakthrough
While studying audiovisual communication at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo and working as a grocery bagger, Bad Bunny began creating and uploading his own music to SoundCloud. In 2016, his song "Diles" caught the attention of DJ Luian, who signed him to the Hear This Music label. He gained wider recognition with the single "Soy Peor" and through collaborations with artists like J Balvin, Cardi B, and Drake. His feature on Cardi B's 2018 hit "I Like It," alongside J Balvin, became his first number-one single on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
Rise to Global Stardom
Bad Bunny's debut studio album, "X 100pre," was released in 2018, peaking at number eleven on the Billboard 200. He followed this with a collaborative album with J Balvin, "Oasis," in 2019, which reached the top ten. His second solo album, "YHLQMDLG" (an acronym for "Yo hago lo que me da la gana" or "I do whatever I want"), was released in 2020 and became the highest-charting all-Spanish album on the Billboard 200 at the time. Later that year, he made history with "El Último Tour Del Mundo," which became the first all-Spanish-language album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200. His 2022 album, "Un Verano Sin Ti," continued this success, spending 13 weeks at number one and becoming the first Spanish-language album to be nominated for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
